Grade 4 - Unit 3 Project - A research and poster about the life in the past and now

In our ever-evolving world, understanding the past is key to appreciating the present and shaping the future. Olympia School’s Grade 4 students are embarking on an exciting project for Unit 3, titled "Long Ago and Today", where they will dive into the fascinating changes that have shaped our daily lives. This project offers students the unique opportunity to explore the differences between life in the past and the present, focusing on elements like phones, toys, clothes, houses, and other aspects of daily living. To enrich their research, students will use a combination of iPads and books, blending modern technology with traditional sources of knowledge.

Exploring the Past and Present with Digital and Print Tools

The project encourages students to take a hands-on approach to learning, combining both digital tools and traditional books. With iPads, students can explore the vast world of online research, tapping into articles, videos, and interactive timelines that make history come alive. These devices allow them to investigate primary sources, access photos and documentaries, and explore historical archives that vividly depict the life of earlier generations.

At the same time, students will have access to books as invaluable research tools. Books provide a more structured, in-depth understanding of historical contexts and perspectives that sometimes can't be found online. Through curated selections of age-appropriate books, students will engage with historical narratives and visual references, allowing them to see how things like clothing styles, transportation, and housing have evolved over time.

Bringing History to Life

As students delve into the differences between long ago and today, they will become time travelers in a sense, gaining a deeper understanding of how life has transformed across generations. They will not only research but also reflect on the reasons for these changes and what might come next. By the end of the project, students will have a richer understanding of the connection between the past and the present and will be able to see the influence of history on their everyday lives.

This Unit 3 project is an exciting blend of old and new, offering Grade 4 students a meaningful way to engage with history while developing the 21st-century skills they need for the future.
